Artist Statement

This exhibition is selected from collages made over the past 38 years, up to the present day. Between 1985 – 2003, collage was my sole medium. A pivotal moment was the 1981 Marlborough Fine Art Gallery, London, show of small collages by Kurt Schwitters. My early work used ‘found’ papers. Later, I painted my own. Exotic papers from India and Thailand became part of my palette, seductive in their beauty and challenging for that reason.
My main concern is that of form. While this is driven by a thorough knowledge of the Design Principles, over the years it has been intuition that has made my process more finely tuned. Drawing has always been a valued skill, and I often feel that I am drawing shapes with a knife when making collage.
My work results from a rigorous process of refinement, in order to create a harmonious expression of the essential nature of my subject. I am inspired by my experience of places - distant and close to home. Subject matter serves as metaphor for intangible ideas. It references boundaries, addresses the fragility of existence, of presence, absence and of memory.

Essay Then and Now Author: Dionisio Cortes, Chief Curator, FRONT art space, New York, NY

A simple but revolutionary act would become a radical step in the evolution of modern art; in 1912 George Braque pasted actual pieces of imitation wood-grain wallpaper onto one of his drawings.
Paper had been widely used by artists when incorporating diverse materials into their work: papier collé, chine collé and decoupage were 19th century popular techniques. However, it was not until the Cubist experiments of Braque and Picasso of early 20th Century that collage was established as a medium in its own right. Rapidly adopted and widely used, collage was a favorite medium of the Avant Garde Dada and Surrealism, and later on of Pop Art. The spirit behind collage is ever present in contemporary art; questioning high and low art forms; juxtaposing images and ideas; and re-appropriating material – all these are still issues present in current conversations.

It is in this context that Marge Loudon Moody truly stands out as a visual artist deeply committed to collage. For the past 38 years, 1979-2017, Ms. Moody has continuously produced collages as part of her oeuvre, 18 of these years, 1985 to 2003, solely devoted to this medium!
Her exhibition Then and Now; Collages 1979-2017, is an exemplary selection of collages from her vast production. Working in series, her collages come in all sizes, from very small to quite large pieces. Her use of material is varied: from using ‘found materials’ in her early work; to using ‘exotic’ fiber papers from India and Thailand; to producing her own painted papers.

Form is Ms. Moody’s main concern and this is evidently clear in every collage piece. Her production is a brilliant balancing act between Design Principles and personal formal decisions driven by her own intuition. See Courtyard (from the Time to Stand and Stare series/Portugal, 2015). One’s sight is handsomely rewarded as one observes her composition and its collage elements: rich, saturated hues; lines in gracious arabesques; sinuous shapes; precise edges; translucent sheeting; and filigree-like passages populate the picture plane, however each element is thoughtfully organized to come together in a timeless composition. In her art statement Ms. Moody writes that when she is making collages, she “often feels like she is drawing shapes with a knife”. One could add to this statement, that, in many occasions, she is also painting with paper. Her mastery of the acrylic medium comes across in her collages with the same controlled fluidity and color success we see in her paintings.

Marge Loudon Moody’s collage abstractions are metaphors for both the material world and the world of ideas. She works thematically as each experience or idea always suggests many possible outcomes. Some series make reference to her experience of places - distant or close. At various times her work examines boundaries, on other occasions the work addresses the fragility of existence, of presence, of absence and of memory.

Thirty-eight years of devotion and discipline make Marge Loudon Moody a remarkable artist creating serious notable artwork. Her collages, rigorously composed, are clean, sharp, and harmonious expressions of the essential nature of the subject.
