In an article on ‘Merz’ published in the journal ‘Ararat’, December 19, 1920, artist Kurt Schwitters wrote:
'A work of art comes about through the artistic evaluation of its elements. I only know how I do it myself, I only know the material upon which I drew, I know not to what end. The material is as inessential as I am. What matters is the shaping''
This body of work is my artistic evaluation of the elements within the papers that I used. ‘Found’ and purchased papers from Thailand, India, Europe and North America all embody their own characteristics. Some are suggestive of their place of origin or of elements found in the environment, while others rely upon each other in a contrasting - or symbiotic - way and create their own relationships. The effectiveness of making the work is based upon an intuitive response and a rigorous process of organization, as I ‘shape’ each one to my specific ends. The satisfaction of viewing the work comes from the creation of an empathetic link between the artist, the image and the viewer, who must look beyond representation and respond to a poetic language often dependent on ambiguity and abstraction.
